Photogrammetry

Photogrammetry is the science of obtaining measurements and information about 3D objects and environments by analyzing 2D photographs. It's essentially the process of creating 3D models from overlapping 2D images. This technique is used in various fields, including surveying, architecture, engineering, and even archaeology.

Core Concept

Photogrammetry uses the principles of geometry and perspective to reconstruct the three-dimensional shape and position of objects from multiple photographs.

How it works:

  1. Image Acquisition: A series of overlapping photographs are taken, capturing the object or scene from different angles.
  2. Software Processing: Specialized photogrammetry software is used to analyze the images, identify common points (features) across multiple images, and calculate their 3D coordinates.
  3. 3D Model Creation: The software then uses these 3D coordinates to create a 3D model, which can be a point cloud, mesh, or other digital representation.
  4. Output: The resulting 3D model can be used for various purposes, including creating orthomosaics (geometrically corrected aerial photographs), symbolic maps, GIS layers, or 3D visualizations.

Types of Photogrammetry

  • Aerial Photogrammetry: Uses images captured from airplanes, drones, or satellites to map large areas and create topographic maps.
  • Close-Range Photogrammetry: Employs cameras positioned relatively close to the subject, often for creating detailed 3D models of smaller objects.

Applications

  • Surveying and Mapping: Creating accurate topographic maps, digital elevation models (DEMs), and 3D models of land and infrastructure.
  • Architecture and Construction: Documenting existing structures, creating as-built models, and facilitating design and construction.
  • Archaeology: Recording and analyzing archaeological sites and artifacts.

Advantages of Photogrammetry
